Product Review for Per 3 Light Therapy

Sleep Science Behind Per 3 Light Therapy:

The brain is hardwired to respond to light for regulation of our sleep and wake cycles. A small collection of light responsive cells called the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus acts as our internal clock. When we are exposed to bright light, our internal clock triggers the body to inhibit melatonin production. Melatonin is a natural hormone secreted by the pineal gland that serves as a messenger to the body to go to sleep. As the melatonin levels increase, the body responds by lowering our core body temperature and chemically inducing us to be sleepy. In this manner, bright light can control the timing of our sleep and wake cycles.

Before the electric age, mankind had the benefit of a regular day and night schedule with the sun resetting our internal clocks for us. In modern times, our technology has confounded the natural process of regulating the body’s circadian rhythms and specifically the sleep and wake cycles. Artificial light from sources like bulbs, TV’s, and computer monitors send mixed signals to the brain after the sun sets (or before it rises). Additionally, the ability to travel rapidly over time zones has also gotten in to the mix. The result has been the development of a host of circadian rhythm disorders.

The ability for light to reset the circadian rhythm is a natural and non-invasive process that is part of who we are. It is no mistake that you will tend to feel better, more alert, and even happier on a bright sunny day; but, may prefer to sleep in on a dark rainy day. Light therapy helps to level the playing field for the brain in a world that has grown up faster than it can adapt.
